2005 Roche Harbor Vacation - Whale Watching
One nice day on our vacation, we circumnavigated San Juan Island. Frequently, the
Puget Sound pod of killer whales is feeding on salmon somewhere in the vicinity. We
got lucky just off Lime Kiln Point, er, I mean the whales where pretty much right there...
Whale Etiquette
We were instructed on how to
approach the whale area, how far to
stand off, and which electronic gear
not to use. This ensures the whales
have a happy good time too.
Whale Sightings!
Well, this is as good as the pictures got this day. We had the wrong equipment, the wrong angle
- and there weren't any big breeches we were lucky enough to snap. I swear, there are whales in
these photos though! We will bring a more serious zoom next time. In the meanwhile, enjoy the
nice artists renditions - and Sonni modeling with a fin for scale.
Lime Kiln Point Light House
Many whale watchers visit Lime Kiln Park
and hope for the whales to be there.
They weren't far off this day.
The park also includes the actual lime
kilns. Built in 1860, the kilns were used
for almost 90 years to produce lime used
in the production of steel, plaster, cement
and paper.
